This restaurant had been around for years. I was last in Gimli about five years ago. This restaurant caught my eye, but I didn't go in back then.
Well, it was time. I climbed up the stairs and walked in.
You place your order at the counter. You then get a number. I decided to dine in, so I went and found a table.
I ordered a chilli dog. It was $5.85 before taxes. I also got a can of Diet Coke. I paid using my debit card.
My number was called. The server came over to my table with my chilli dog. Sure, it looks like the chilli pot exploded all over the hot dog and bun, but don't let that deter you from trying it. The chilli is flavourful and has a nice kick to it. It was large enough for me to feel satisfied after I ate it with a knife and fork (you have no choice).
I went to leave and a staff member quickly came over to clear my plate away. Great service! I thanked her.
The restaurant has a bar and TVs. It does get stuffy. There is no air conditioning. Instead, there are a few floor fans around the place.

During a recent stop over in Gimli we decided to check this place out. It's big sign and decorative exterior seemed inviting. It's a casual place. Food is ordered at the counter and it's brought to your table when it's ready. It's open seating so just sit where you want. We sat at the screened off front of the restaurant but it got hot there even with the ceiling fans, no AC. Food was ok. We ordered the pickerel and chips. And the pickerel with salad. Pickerel was flaky and seasoning was good. Salad was crisp. Why did I give 3 stars? Well, service could have been better. The lady taking our order seemed annoyed and irritated about a coworker's mistake on a previous customer's order. Not too welcoming for a first time patron. The self serve water station was dispensing warm water. Cold water please, especially on a hot day. And the tartar sauce was a small commercially packaged product. I was expecting home made tartar sauce. It would have made a big difference to the food. Price was reasonable.

When people find out I hail from Winnipeg they inevitably mention 'frigid winters'. What many people don't know is that Manitoba is blessed with beautiful summers and white sand beaches.
Gimli is a great destination for beach & 'eats'. I had the pickerel platter which was delicious. Don't skip the fresh house-made lemonade. I am not a huge lemonade fan but this was a refreshing treat I want to repeat.
Order at the counter. We sat overlooking the street on the veranda area and it was entertaining to watch people as we dined. -

We go every year for the pickerel dinner which comes with Greek salad, lemon roasted potatoes and garlic toast. An excellent deal for $12.95.
As it's close to the beach, it's a convenient place to head after a day in the sun.
The atmosphere is a casual beach house family style restaurant. There is no air conditioning, just fans. We like to sit in the screened front porch as it's cooler if there's any breeze. Seating can be difficult to find, however.
This is not a full-service restaurant - you stand in line and pay in advance when you order so it's best to have someone find a table to save while the other orders or you may find you don't have a table when the food comes.
Beware of the front steps - they are covered with an outdoor carpet material to hold together the wood which seems to be literally falling apart. I believe it's likely rotten. The steps shift and can cause you to lose your balance.
